02/12/06 Govan Athletic 2nds vs Burnage Metro A

What can i say lads, out of the top drawer was that one! I was gutted not to have been in the thick of the action, but still managed to get involved, and it was a pleasure to watch!

Hurrah, for the first time this season we actually started the game awake and went at them! Creating chances and getting stuck in. Whytey set the tone with a bone cruncher 10 seconds into the game, and everyone else followed suit with fully commited tackles and effort all round. The first goal came as Marsden broke loose from a well played pass and slotted home. With fantastic effort defensively and some goal keeping heroics from Sam, we kept the score that way, until James was gifeted a second for us to give us a bit of breathing space. This had them rattled and they really did not like it. We played the better football and continued to press, whilst at the same time keeping our own net safe! Half time 2-0 up against a side that has'nt dropped a point all season - what was going on, we had finally clicked and had a good squad thats what!

Then second half we continued where we left off, the work rate was 150% from everyone and playing as a true team, working hard, good communication and playing to the whistle! Half way through the second half Marsden hit his second as he flicked a Stu Ryan rocket throw in, into the top corner. Surely safe now, but still we went at them, the more it went on the more frustrated they became and after one blaring miss from Whytey he managed to put in our fourth from 5 yards out (although he did try and put it over the bar!). 4 - 0 game over and good night. Bob Booker took the MOM for a superb performance at right back (and he had to come off after 70 minutes through injury) but every player was amazing!

I also think i deserve a mention for doing a stirling job of winding their number one big cheese up all game form the sidelines - even if i did nearly get smacked but the raging bull at the end, but i just found it all very funny and was well chuffed wth a top perfomance, 3 points and a trouncing of the top side in our division! Well done guys!

18/11/06 Walley Range A vs Govan Athletic 2nds

Oh my god, yet again we did'nt wake up from K.O!!! We all need a strong coffee or something to get our heads on the game. Two quick goals crafted by passing and movement between our defence and midfield saw Walley Range go two goals to the good within 10 minutes. Then a spectacular O.G (in the class of Neville and Dixon!) from yours truely came as a 50:50 challenge was thumped in style from 30 yards into the top corner of my own net (at least I have now scored this year!!). It was looking pretty bad and we had a big mountain to climb to get back in the game - but we gave it a damn good go!

Once we had the usual bad first 10 minutes out of the way, we started to play and created many chances. Tebay scored a good one on one from a break away, 3-1 back within touching distance! A few more squandered chances, a goal mouth scramble where the keeper had 3 or 4 good saves in a row and a blatant goal disallowed (as the keeper stopped it over the line) meant we were unlucky to not be level at half time. We had picked up a few injuries in the first half as we found out this team are no lightweights when it comes to the physical side of the game!

We came out of the traps second half and continued where we left off, creating some good moves and chances to boot. James who came on at half time was utilised well down the left to create chances in the box of which Saad got on the end of one, 3-2 and we had the momentum! Then, in probably their only threatening attack of the second half their attacker ran in-front of Stu, was tripped and penalty awarded. With the ball slotted away they had pinched another completely against the run of play.

We did'nt give up though and still chances came, Rob G unlucky with a fantastic long range strike hitting the bar and then put just wide from Saad. James also forced some very good saves from the keeper and Saad had a goal ruled offside which was very dubious in my opinion. In the last few minutes James broke down the left and cut the ball accross for Saad to slot home, but the clock was all but out. A very good performance apart from that dreaded first 10 minutes again. Come on lads lets all make sure we have our weetabix, a strong coffee and get to the game on time (Locking yourself out is ill advised!!!) and be alert from the K.O.

11/11/06 Govan Athletic 2nds vs AFC Oldham 2

What a contrast to last week! This week we faced a side that was bottom of the league and did not (until now) have any points! But as so often happens we took them lightly and they took something from a game which we should most definately have come away with 3 points! Again (as always) we started slowly - it took the first 10 minutes to wake up. Then for the next half an hour (up to half time, 40 mins each way due to them being late) we actually played with some purpose! Some good periods of play and passing were capped by a good run down the right from James and a poachers (!!!) finish from Rob G ( who worked hard the whole game). But we did not get that important second goal which would have probably finished them off.

The second half was poor, Ok the wind played a small part, but we were too complacement did not play the ball on the floor and let them back in the game as a sub, who had just came on, scored with his first touch! I suppose it could have been worse - they could of actually beaten us! But hay, as the old saying goes theres always next week! Lets bounce back from this and raise our game for next week, we can still say we are unbeaten in three now!

MOM split between Rob G, Sam, Stu Ryan and James.

4/11/06 Old Stretfordians A vs Govan Athletic 2nds

Tough looking fixture this week, against a team that have not lost this season. Again we had a strong looking squad and the feeling was positive before the match! We started well, enjoying the better of the play for most of the first half. The referee was not the best shall we say, which upset the game and its flow a little; but all in all we had a very good half, creating a few chances and having more territory and possession. Sam in goal, dominated his area very well and chances for the opposition were few and far between. There was more talking and chat than there has been which is another good improvement.

We continued to play in a positive fashion in the second half, again the forwards working hard to take the pressure off and create chances! Then about 15 minutes into the second half bradders wipped in a quality corner and Ricky Lee got a firm head behind it to put us in a well deserved lead. They did threaten at times but the continued high work rate of all players and Sam continuing to be top rate between the sticks, we shut the door again and again. With about 10 minutes to go, Rob G crossed in a good ball from the right and somehow after rolling up Stokes body the ball ended up looping into the net. 2 - 0 and home and dry. Not quite, they came back at us and did'nt give up, but we held strong and battled well to hold out. In the dying minutes Sam made a fantasic top corner save to keep that clean sheet intact.

So a fantastic result and 3 more points! Lots of positives - clean sheet, two more goals, good communication and good all round effort and performance from every player again! Especially impressive were Sam, who was quality in goal and got that elusive clean sheet; Stoker, who after a week off was strong and bossed the midfield superbly and lastly the man of the match Ricky Lee, who again put in another top performance at centre back which was topped of with a John Terry style goal to boot! Lets keep this core of players (with a few more to come back in we finally have some strength and depth in the squad) and continue this run! Same again nex week lads!!!

28/10/06 Govan Athletic 2nds vs Bedians A

After a fairly good effort last week we were hoping to take some of the positives into this game - which we did! A strong looking squad today gave way for a good performance. For once we actually were awake from the kick off and took and early lead through Marsden, who flicked on a superb ball in from Bradders. It looked as though we might run away with a big victory as we created a few good chances - then we switched off for a short period! A lucky goal with a VERY dubious offside over-rule saw Bedians equalise. For the next ten minutes or so we were poor at picking up men and allowed them some good chances, luckily and through Stu's goal keeping expertise they didn't. We then re-composed and started to play again. The excellent work rates and tireless chasing down from our forwards brought us two more goals by half time. Marsden playing major parts in both, scoring another and setting up James for his first goal for the club.

The second half was just as action packed and even more entertaining! An awesome strike from James got the team fired up again and we were 4 -1 up, things were looking good!! Then more good play by James put Henry through to slot in a 5th to put us 5 -1 up and cruising. Then the real fun started. We got a bit sloppy defending a corner and they managed to scramble in a 2nd. It was soon after this that Stu Ryan decied to make the game more interesting by throwing the ball into his own net, then scramble after it (with no one within 20 yds of him). To Put the nail in a crazy second half Rich Smith performed a super-sub effort with a 30 yard rocket that made the keeper look a fool. 6 - 3 it stayed and the final wistle gave us a well deserved win and 3 very important points.

Every player put in a good effort today, a very good team performance with some nice passages of play and more talking, which really make the difference! Special mentions to Bradders - who had a fantastic game in the midfield, controlling the tempo by slowing down the play and spreading the ball in a Stevie G style fashion. Also to the three strikers which defended from the front by chasing everything and gambling runs to great effect today. Man of the match went to James who had another very good game and is growing in confidence and also hit two goals (one bolter!). Now lets keep this up and get a bit of a run together and climb up the league.

Oh yeah Rob G wanted a special mention for his efforts in midfield also - but i can't be arsed! Good effort from every player though, Top stuff

21/10/06 Burnage Metro A vs Govan Athletic 2nds

This week the 2nds had a very tough looking fixture against a team that are top of the league, have won every game and only conceded 5 goals!! With 4 defeats on the trot and just had a week off this was always going to be a very hard game. It did'nt help by the fact that for the first 20 minutes we did'nt wake up at all. There were a few new faces in the squad and a slightly different take on the formation and line up but took a little time to gel. Unfortunately in that "time to gel" period we found ourselves 2-0 down. The first goal was sloppy defensively with one of their midfielders taking it round about 5 players then endin up in our area then the ball in the back of the net. The second was a free kick on the edge of the area which was well placed to the right! Things were looking bad, but then we started playing, and for the next 50 minutes of the game we were probably the better team, all the lads put the effort in, winning challenges and at times playing some neat football. Unfortunatley no goal came from all this good work and pressure and in the later stage of the game they scored a break away goal against the run of play. But even with not long left and being 3 - 0 down everyone battled on to complete a very spirited performance. I feel the 2nd half was perhaps the best we have played this season and that against a team that is well on top of this league - if we keep that effort up, luck will start to goes our way, goals will come and results will start to happen for us! We just need to keep that core of players to create continuity that is so needed for a team to succeed!
