"Hard work brings success, which brings enjoyment, which brings success..."

Welcome to the website of GOVAN ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB.  The club was established in 2001 by Jack Norbury, with help from Simon Bancroft, Phil Norbury and Grant Hood.

GOVAN were initially sponsored by the Foresters Arms on Sandy Lane, Romiley.  The former landlord, David Diggle was extremely helpful through both his enthusiasm and financial support.  In 2008 we moved to the White Hart in Woodley, where we're supported and provided with after match food.

The story behind the team name, GOVAN, is that inspired by Sir Alex Ferguson's Autobiography, Jack decided to form a team using the name of Fergie's birthplace. GOVAN ATHLETIC FC played their first season in the Stockport Football League (South Manchester), where they finished runners-up in the 2001/02 season.

We now have two teams in the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur Football League, and play our home games at the University Sports Ground, in Sale on Saturdays.  We train 2-3 times a week in the summer, and on Wednesday nights, 8.30pm-10.30pm at Woodley Sports Stadium, during the season.

GOVAN ATHLETIC is a new, young, and ambitious club with plans to continue expanding and developing over the coming years!
